While the media fans the flames of mass hysteria over swine flu, which has infected only a small number of people and killed almost none, they routinely ignore the more common, if not widespread, causes of death, many of which are completely, or nearly completely, preventable if only people were educated and motivated enough to make changes to their lifestyles. Imagine if just a fraction of the energy that people are putting into avoiding swine flu were put into efforts to reduce smoking, high blood pressure and obesity, which together are responsible for over one million premature deaths every year. “To have hundreds of thousands of premature deaths caused by these modifiable risk factors is shocking and should motivate a serious look at whether our public health system has sufficient capacity to implement interventions and whether it is currently focusing on the right set of interventions,” said Majid Ezzati, PhD, […]

In honor of Earth Day, which was April 22, I’ve been writing this week about things you can do to improve both your health and the health of the environment. On Tuesday, I wrote about changing your diet in an earth-friendly manner, and today I’d like to talk about another activity that would be good for you and good for the environment; namely, walking more and driving less. You can also substitute bicycle riding for driving, but walking is easier and needs no equipment.
Countless studies have proven the health benefits of walking, and less driving is obviously beneficial both from reduced energy consumption and lower production of pollutants such as greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming. Walking has been shown repeatedly to be an excellent form of exercise, especially when done briskly and when done daily. But any amount of walking that you can add to your day is […]

A new medical study has proved what I’ve long held to be true: when it comes to dieting, it’s not what you eat, but how much of whatever it is you do eat that matters. Despite the hype of each new fad diet that comes along, where fats are in one day and out the next, where carbs are bad one day and good the next, etc., etc., ad nauseum, research published in this week’s New England Journal of Medicine has found no difference in weight loss when four very different diets were compared. So long as total calories, regardless of their source, were reduced, and the person stuck to the diet, equal weight loss occurred in all four patient groups. What mattered the most was sticking to the diet. For many of the participants, what helped in this regard was attending counseling sessions – the more they attended the […]

The latest fad weight loss scheme is something called the Morning Banana Diet (MBD), which started in Japan and swept across the country like an unrelenting tsunami. It’s so popular there that bananas literally fly off the shelves as fast as they can be stocked. But you should be forewarned, Japan is known for its fad diets and there have been many others before this one that also were so big they caused product shortages. And, of course, like all fad diets, this one will likely lead to some weight loss in the short run but will fail in the long run, which is why they are always replaced by the next crazy idea. But this one actually has a hidden nugget of gold called resistant starch that I’ll explain a little later.
So what is the Morning Banana Diet? Like all fad diets, there […]

I’ve been doing quite a bit of research lately, trying to figure out what the best diet and exercise regiment would be for me. I’ve analyzed the best cardio programs, searched for obscenely healthy recipes, read all about weight supplements including Akavar reviews, and severely cut back on the sugar I bring into the house. And while I’m certainly not obese, I could definitely stand to shed a few pounds. Thus began my quest…how to cut calories without actually having to count them. Lest you think it can’t be done, I assure you it can…by following simple food rules such as these:
Incorporate fruit and veggies into your diet. Buy what’s in season and what you really like - cut them up, stock up your fridge, and enjoy a tasty yet healthy snack when you feel […]
