Can you still afford to buy nutritious fresh food, which is notoriously more expensive, or will you turn to more calorie-dense, less nutritious packaged foods? Will you “dine” at fast food restaurants more often, eating their high-fat, high-sugar but low-price offerings? Recent articles in the Los Angeles Times and on MSNBC.com address this issue.
You might think that leaner times would lead to leaner waistlines as people cut back on spending. But it appears that the opposite is true. Adam Drewnowski, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington in Seattle and Director of their Center for Obesity Research, is quoted on […]

Hawthorne for heart failure - good news and bad news

If you are an advocate of using natural remedies and you suffer from chronic heart failure, there’s good news on the beneficial effects of the herbal extract hawthorn. A recent analysis of 14 double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical studies (the best types of medical studies available) found that oral preparations using hawthorn leaf and flower extracts improved both symptoms and heart function in patients with chronic heart failure. But before you rush off to the pharmacy or use the Internet to order hawthorn products, please bear in mind the following facts:
• Chronic heart failure is an extremely serious medical condition that requires careful diagnosis, ongoing monitoring and complex medical therapy
• Most of the people in the 14 medical studies were receiving hawthorn in addition to other prescription medications
• While heart failure can come on from “out of the blue,” it is most often associated with other chronic medical conditions […]
