I’ve written about the benefits of walking before, but there’s a few new reasons to talk about it again. First is a newly published study that figured out how fast you need to walk in order to achieve a “moderate” level of intensity. That’s important because the current recommendation is that you should get 30 minutes of “moderate intensity” exercise five times per week. But if you didn’t know what “moderate intensity” was that recommendation wouldn’t be of much help. More details below.
The second newsworthy item is that April 8 is National Start! Walking Day. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), “On this day, employees are encouraged to wear sneakers to work and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It’s pretty simple to get your company to participate in National Start! Walking Day. Start by having your HR representative or Worksite […]

A new medical study has proved what I’ve long held to be true: when it comes to dieting, it’s not what you eat, but how much of whatever it is you do eat that matters. Despite the hype of each new fad diet that comes along, where fats are in one day and out the next, where carbs are bad one day and good the next, etc., etc., ad nauseum, research published in this week’s New England Journal of Medicine has found no difference in weight loss when four very different diets were compared. So long as total calories, regardless of their source, were reduced, and the person stuck to the diet, equal weight loss occurred in all four patient groups. What mattered the most was sticking to the diet. For many of the participants, what helped in this regard was attending counseling sessions – the more they attended the […]

Friday February 6, 2009 is National Wear Red Day, which is a day for all Americans to be aware of heart disease in women and to wear red in support of The Heart Truth: A National Awareness Campaign for Women About Heart Disease. Everyone can participate by wearing a favorite red dress, sweater, shirt, tie or even the specially designed Red Dress Pin on Friday. Despite the emphasis on wearing red, this year’s message, is that “Heart Disease Doesn’t Care What You Wear - It’s the #1 Killer of Women.”
Every woman needs to know about heart disease. While you hear a lot about breast cancer in the media, the fact is that heart disease is the number one killer of women with one in four American women dying of heart disease. In fact, as the picture below graphically illustrates, in 2005, heart disease caused 332,000 deaths compared to 41,000 for […]

New research has found that gardening is an effective way to exercise. Researchers at Kansas State University determined that gardening is a form of “moderate intensity” exercise that can easily contribute to the exercise recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which advises at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days of the week in order to maintain and improve optimal health. This recommendation is especially important for older Americans, who can be less likely to fulfill this requirement, yet are more at risk for chronic diseases associated with aging. Moderate intensity exercise is physical activity that causes an increase in breathing or heart rate and is typified by such things as walking, cycling, swimming or even dancing.
It is well-known that older adults often tend toward a sedentary lifestyle, and that this is one of the factors leading to a decline in […]

As of June 21st summer is officially here and a swimsuit is my preferred piece of clothing. I feel like some days I go straight from my pajamas, to my swimsuit, and then back to my pajamas. Although the hype of the spring crash diet has passed, it’s still important to stay on top of your health. With backyard barbeques and fun filled vacations, here are a few quick tips to make sure you stay in shape and keep that killer summer bod.
Drink lots of water! It’s easy to get dehydrated in such hot weather, so drink up. Water also helps curb your appetite so you won’t find yourself snacking throughout day.
If you get hungry snack on watermelon, grapes, honeydew- anything that has high water […]

I had a “ah ha” moment today as I looked out my apartment window at the incredible mountains towering above me, I realized that I’ve lived in Utah for the last 5 years and have hardly taken advantage of the countless outdoor adventures that this state has to offer. My husband and I will be moving away in a little over a year, so we’ve made it a point to make a list of all the Utah family recreation activities that we’ve wanted to do and then scheduled them into the next few months of summer. Just last weekend we went on a hike up to a gorgeous waterfall and I couldn’t believe that we’d lived her for so long and never even heard of the falls. Being outside is such a fun and exciting way to exercise, not to mention the emotional and spiritual benefits that […]
