Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, who also goes by the name “MCA,” has announced that he’s about to undergo treatment for a cancerous tumor in his left parotid gland, which has caused the Beastie Boys to cancel their upcoming concert tour and postpone their new album release. The news has left many people with questions about this type of cancer, its actual location, and, of course, its prognosis. The good news is that it seems the cancer was caught early and should respond well to treatment with a favorable outcome and little or no impact on Yauch’s ability to sing.

Forty-five years after then U.S. Surgeon General Luther Terry declared that smoking causes cancer, we are finally poised to see the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) assume regulatory authority over products containing tobacco. And while any legislation that has taken this long to come to pass will be seen by many as too little, too late, most would agree it’s a step in the right direction. The bill, called the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was more than ten years in the making and represents the first big federal step against smoking since the 1971 ban on TV and radio advertising and the 1988 ban on smoking on commercial airplanes. As Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, so aptly put it, “[Now] the most deadly product sold in America will no longer be the least regulated product sold in America.”

So it will come as no surprise that I was troubled to learn that Alaska Governor and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin had installed a tanning bed in the Governor’s mansion shortly after taking office in early 2007 and that this was being widely reported in the media. My concerns were that Governor Palin’s apparent endorsement of indoor tanning might lead some people to believe that it’s an okay thing to do.

Virtual colonoscopy is an x-ray examination of the colon used to screen for cancer. It is also called CT colonography because the x-ray test used is a CT scan (also called computed tomography or CAT scan for computed axial tomography). Virtual colonoscopy is in the news because of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) that compared the x-ray test to traditional colonoscopy and found comparable results in terms of identifying abnormal growths. In an unprecedented and controversial move, Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, has issued a memo warning of the potential risk of long-term cell phone use and cancer. Although numerous studies have found no link between cell phone use and cancer, Dr. Heberman noted that he is aware of more definitive data, compiled by the World Health Organization, which is currently unpublished, and which may not be published in the near future.
