Erectile dysfunction - do ask, do tell

With the advent of a variety of drugs and their near ubiquitous advertising, knowledge about erectile dysfunction has become commonplace and, to a great degree, has lost it’s stigma over the last decade. What you might not know, however, is that erectile dysfunction is often the first sign of either already having cardiovascular disease or being at increased risk of developing it. Its occurrence, therefore, should be a signal to both the man and his physician that a thorough medical evaluation is extremely important. For a man to simply ask for a pill or for a physician to simply prescribe it, without first taking a complete medical history, conducting a full physical examination and conducting appropriate blood tests (and other tests as indicated) would be foolhardy at best.

Blood pressure drug might help Alzheimer’s - great news for mice!

Maybe you saw the headlines that the high blood pressure drug Diovan (valsartan) might have some kind of impact on Alzheimer’s disease. But depending on what article you read, you’d get a very different report. If you read the article in U.S. News & World Report, you’d have gotten a fair and balanced picture of the research on which the headlines were based. But if you read the article at Fox News, you’d have gotten a highly misleading account.
First of all, the research being reported was conducted in mice a pretty important bit of information that tells you that it has no immediate relevance to humans and that any potential benefit for mankind would be years away.
