Supplement helps avoid some kidney stones

for seizures with the ketogenic diet at Baltimore’s John Hopkins
Children’s Center. It found children receiving the supplement potassium
citrate were seven times less likely than others to develop kidney
stones.

Their study, published in the Journal of the American Medical
Association, found desirable behaviors — exercising regularly, drinking
moderately, not smoking, not being overweight and eating a diet that
includes vegetables, fruits and cereal — were each associated with a
lower lifetime risk of heart failure compared to a corresponding
undesirable behavior.

Edible coating may make fish healthier

The study, published in Food Chemistry, found fish oil added to an
invisible food wrap made from citosan — a substance found in
crustacean shells that keeps out bacteria and fungi — not only kept
lingcod fillets fresh in the refrigerator for three weeks and in the
freezer three months but also tripled the amount the omega-3 fatty acids
normally found in lingcod.

Tamoxifen may stem fungal infections

Dr. Damian Krysan of the University of Rochester Medical Center and
colleagues found tamoxifen kills yeast in mice with Candida infections.
The researchers suggest the drug, used to help prevent breast cancer
recurrence, may kill fungus cells and stop them from causing disease.
