Breast cancer: New tumor marker guidelines and Oncotype DX

Filed under: Oncotype DX, tumor, breast cancer, new treatment, healthcare, Health — admin @ 1:30 pm

If you’re living with breast cancer, chances are you are already familiar with tumor markers, even if you’re not aware that you are! That’s because estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER/PR) and HER-2 (Human Epidermal Growth Receptor 2) are tumor markers with which many breast cancer patients are at least passingly, if not intimately, familiar. And with the recent release of the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s (ASCO) 2007 updated guidelines on tumor markers in breast cancer, as well as their release of a patient brochure on the same subject, it seems timely to take a brief look at this important topic, particularly in regard to new recommendations.
Part of the problem with tumor markers is that they come in a variety of forms, and so there’s no easy way to describe what they are. They are substances (just think of how broad that word is) that can be present on the […]

Scare Yourself Slim!

Filed under: Fat Loss, Diet — admin @ 4:19 pm

Okay, so I guess that’s not exactly probable.  But my husband and I went to a Denver, Colorado haunted house and I swear I jumped, leapt, and shook so much I must have lost nearly five pounds!
Halloween is a tough for me because while it is my absolutely favorite holiday (I have the craziest costumes you’ve ever seen), it does mark the beginning of my annual (dreaded) holiday weight gain.  This year, I’ve vowed to change.  You can too with these small and simple tips!

Cut back on the candy!  Not only will all that candy will rot your teeth (remember hearing that as a kid?), it packs tons of unnecessary sugar and calories.  You should also implement healthy eating with your kids, so make sure your monitor their daily candy intake during the days following Halloween.
Hosting a party?  Try serving yummy healthy treats rather than the traditional candy and sweets, […]

Losing Baby Fat

Filed under: Fat Loss — admin @ 10:26 am

Whether it was deliberate or an unplanned pregnancy, no woman ever plans or wants to gain an excess amount of fat during pregnancy.  But alas, it is a fact of life.  Many women lose the fat after the birth; however, many of us are just not that lucky!  So what’s the best way to get rid of all that baby-fat?
As much as we may not want to face it, exercise and healthy eating are the only sure fire ways you will lose the weight.  Losing baby fat is not much different from normal weight loss, aside from the fact that you may be breast feeding, which in that case you will need more calories daily.
First of all, you should modify your eating habits if needed.  Kick carbonated, sugary drinks, fatty foods, and high carbs to the curb.  Eat lots of fruit and vegetables, which also make for great mid-day […]

Suicide - get help NOW!

Perhaps it’s because our readers live with chronic illnesses, perhaps it’s because we have several mental health communities, but, whatever the reasons, HealthTalk receives a disturbing number of e-mails from people discussing the possibility of their committing suicide. Did you know that suicide is the 11th most common cause of death in the U.S. and the third most common cause of death in the 15 – 24 year-old range, or that it’s often related to serious depression (including bipolar disorder), alcohol or substance abuse, chronic illness, and/or major stressful life events? People with the highest risk of suicide are white men, although women and teens report more suicide attempts.
When someone talks about suicide, it’s a serious matter, and you should listen carefully because they need help, and you may be the best person to provide it. Non-judgmental listening and offering emotional support may be critical to building trust. Suicide prevention hotlines […]

Cough and cold medicine in children and infants

We can all agree that having a cold is a miserable experience. And when our babies and young children are suffering with them, it’s even worse. Surely there must be something we can do to help them, we think, and if we can’t, surely their doctor can. The unfortunate reality, however, is that there is precious little we can do other than wait it out. There are a few things you can try, and I’ll describe them below, but the truth is that most of the products clogging the pharmacy shelves have never been shown to work, and, what’s worse, when used incorrectly they can be dangerous.
You’ve probably read recently that a number of cough/cold products intended for use by infants are being taken off the market voluntarily by their manufacturers. Oral Infant cough and cold medicines voluntarily withdrawn are:
• Dimetapp Decongestant Plus Cough Infant Drops
• Dimetapp Decongestant Infant Drops
• […]

Weight loss tip

Filed under: Fat Loss, Diet — admin @ 10:36 am

I know this is a common one, but one thing that really helps me lose weight is to drink water everytime time I feel hungry between normal meals. Not only does this fill my stomach, but it also helps me get my 8 cups per day. I feel like I often eat just because I’m bored, or because there’s food in front of me. Obviously this is not good.
But when I fill myself with (zero-calorie!) water, I can usually make it to the next meal.  Give it a shot…see if it works for you.

Incurable Peolpe

Filed under: impossible, disease, over, whelming, undestand, incurable, seeming, Health — admin @ 1:20 pm

Incurable disease are over whelming and seeming impossible to understand.
It is the same with incurable people. These are people who refuse to make good choices. They are unwilling to change their habits and their life styles. They do not let themselves be well.
What kind of person are you?

New chemotherapy approved for advanced breast cancer - Ixempra

Filed under: breast cancer, Ixempra, new treatment, FDA, Health warnings, healthcare, Health — admin @ 6:10 pm

The FDA has approved a new type of chemotherapy for the treatment of advanced breast cancer. Marketed by Bristol-Myers Squibb, Ixempra (ixabepilone) is the first of a new class of chemotherapeutic agents called epitholones that target a protein called tubulin, which is necessary for cells to grow and multiply (which they do in a out of control way in cancer). As cancers progress or recur after treatment with one type of chemotherapy, doctors typically give another type of drug with a different mechanism of action hoping to attack the cancer in a new way. The approval of Ixempra provides such a new type of treatment, and it is the first new type of chemotherapy to be approved in many years.
Ixempra is approved for the treatment of metastatic or locally advanced breast cancer in patients who have already received certain other chemotherapy agents and whose cancer has progressed. It is to […]

Weight Loss Tip 63: Clean Out Your Fish Tank

If you had a fish tank and the fish were ill and unhealthy because their water was filthy, would you treat the fish or change the water. This analogy sticks with me. I hope it will stick with you too.
Obviously, if we just treat the fish, they will never get better because their environment has not improved. But, if we change the grimy water, the fish will most like heal themselves.
Think of it, most our food is dead, contaminated and compromised. We expose our bodies constantly to chemicals and toxins in our drinking water, the air we breath and in the food we eat.
We need a change of environment. We need to clean out our own tanks before it is too late.
Unfortunately, traditional approaches attempt to treat the diseases that poor diets and other heath hazards influence, but they make little or no attempt to […]

The Grand Design of Things

Filed under: Support, , Uncategorized — admin @ 10:39 pm

It is so awesome when the grand design of things comes in to plan view. When you can see that you are conected to a whole universe that is bigger than just you and your daily struggles and that that connectedness is calling to you, challenging you to be much more than you think you are. It’s counting on us to touch one another and strengthen one another.
At different times, each one of has some event in our lives that helps us to see and be amazed at the grand design of things. Often we forget how grateful we are for our friends, family and even strangers until one of those moments hits us. The big picture. The sense that we are not alone and we are destined for greater things.
For each of us this journey is different. It enters our lives in […]
